When you look at the baby on the photo, what do you first see? Well, I see how beautiful her big eyes are. I notice her colored eyebrows in Kohl (eyeliner) and the three dots in the middle of her forehead. Such application of Kohl on the face is very common in both adults and children, it is very symbolic to most coastal communities. They believe, “it protects one from evil spirits”. Hence, that is why her face is beautifully decorated 🙂
At three months only, baby Meali was diagnosed with Atrioventricular canal defect (A-V Canal Defect)
From birth, her physical growth was not progressing well as that of normal children and that is when the mother raised her concerns to her pediatrician only to be diagnosed with the heart defect. As you can imagine, that was the most devastating news her parents received. No mother wishes to hear any sort of illness ailing her baby and it is no less of a feeling for baby Meali’s mother.
In her mother’s arms, baby Meali rests while listening to her mother’s heartbeat. It is the one thing that she is familiar with since her formation in her mothers womb. Her mother’s heartbeat comforts her; it distracts her little mind from paying attention to her pain; in her arms she feels safe.
Baby Meali’s parents want to give Meali a chance to life, health and happiness. They are appealing for your help in raising funds to enable Meali’s surgery to take place in India.
The community around them have done a commendable job of getting Meali’s story to the public through social media and other means. Her story was recently featured in the Star newspaper.
My good friend Jimia has been in the forefront, trying to get Meali’s story to the public. Her facebook wall is filled up with her advocacy; pleading to friends and family to support Meali’s chance to a healthier life.
I want a better life for Meali. I want her health, up and running in her home town in Kwale. I want to see her grow up and blossoming into a fine lady. I appeal to you my dear readers, friends and family to be part of Meali’s recovery journey by helping raise funds for her surgery.
