A few weeks back, I was browsing through several fashion blogs and I happened to land on Style Gallivanter by Miranda Sakhino. Her blog bursts with stunning images rich in hues of blues and yellows. Her photos are well shot and her style is concious to the trending fashion of today’s world. I loved everything about her and I dared myself into emailing her with the intention of befriending her. Indeed, Luck was on my side, with several back and forth emails – here I am featuring her on my blog. Meet Miranda…
My name is Miranda. I am a Melbourne (Australia) based Style Consultant and the blogger behind the Style & Travel hub – www.StyleGallivanter.com. But of course my full time calling is being a mum to a cute 2 year old and a wife to a hot East African guy.
My style is forever changing so it’s a bit difficult to categorize it, but just going through my blog I can see a few recurring themes which can be somewhat be defined as ‘modern vintage with a touch of African extravaganza’. I love things inspired by old school movies, you know, when women used to be feminine (but classy). And of course growing up in Africa (Botswana), I do not fear colour at all – I will find a way to inject bursts of colour even into an all black outfit LOL. That’s just how I roll… Colour is life!
The preppy style tends to be one of my favourites too – anything with a bowtie gets a tick as far as I am concerned. Oh, and I do love me some big over the top accessories, hence the plethora of oversized turbans and sunglasses you will find on my blog. It’s all strategic really – anything that will help me skip a makeup step or skip doing my hair is a winner. Being a toddler’s mum, I do not have a lot of time on my hands, so I have to hassle whichever way I can to keep things stylish. That being said, I tend to go for easy pieces like jumpsuits (the right one can save you tonnes of time without compromising on style), and I do a lot of layering which makes things easier if I want to wear out of season items (summer items in winter), or if items don’t fit the same way they used to (yes ladies…)
When I am travelling though, I tend to be inspired by the culture and history of wherever it is I am going. i.e. if I am visiting Greece, my suitcase will definitely be full of metallic cuffs, goddess type flowing items, gladiator shoes etc. It just makes life easier in terms of choosing what to pack, and I get more cohesive editorial content from that.
But all in all, I think keeping things classy should always be the ultimate goal, especially in a world where trends are swaying us towards ‘walking around naked’. Find your own personal style and rock the living daylights out of that without losing your dignity. At the end of the day, as much as we’d hate to admit it, our style is the first thing people see and it kind of defines who we are (and how we should be treated) before we even utter a word.
Current trends that have caught my attention.
1. Flat mules – Finally the flat shoe gets and upgrade! This one especially makes sense for the stylish moms out there because prancing around in heels with a baby is a bit unrealistic, right? Definitely one of my faves. A statement shoe that ticks all the boxes – Comfortable. Stylish and… Just Easy. Gotta love that!
2. Oversized flamboyant sleeves – I especially love the ones that reference periodic style elements with big ruffles and all. Just so dramatic and pretty! The perfect style when you are trying to dress up your jeans. And did I mention they do a good job at hiding “bye bye’s” (a.k.a tuckshop arms)… can I get an AMEN!
3.Layering Dresses on Pants – A bit of a strange one, but this gives one the opportunity to wear that pretty summer dress in winter! Let’s be real, sometimes the weather just won’t let you be great, right? It’s a trend that’s accessible for everyone, and I love it because it makes people re-think their wardrobe and learn to wear items differently.
That’s it from me folks. Love Miranda
